Donoughmore Athletic 4 Rylane 0

Donoughmore bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat with a comprehensive victory over Rylane in Stuake on Saturday afternoon last. The pitch and weather conditions were perfect for football and Donoughmore duly obliged. The first twenty minutes was a case of both teams finding their feet and the exchanges were pretty even during this period. Donoughmore started to get a grip on the game after this and in the 25th minute Sean O’Mahony had a header brilliantly saved by Ray Moynihan in the Rylane goal. The chance was created after some excellent interchange play and a further good passing move 5 minutes later left Aidan O’Shea with the keeper to beat from 8 yards but again Donoughmore were foiled when a goal looked certain. Donoughmore were really on top now but needed a goal to show for their efforts. The goal looked odds on in the 40th minute when, from another excellent Pat Foley corner, the ball dropped invitingly for Colm O’Sullivan but his well hit shot was blazed over the bar. It looked liked it was going to be one of those days for Donoughmore until they were awarded a free kick out on the left wing in the 44th minute. Pat Foley swung a wonderful ball into the far post where Tom Daly ghosted in to plant a superb header low into the corner of the net to give Donoughmore a well deserved half-time lead. Rylane came out with a lot more purpose at the start of the second half and had Donoughmore under pressure for the first 15 minutes. However, Donoughmore gradually regained control as the half wore on. The all important second goal came in the 60th minute when another free kick this time from Connie Buckley was finished well at the back post by Damien Hennessy. Hennessy was causing a lot of problems for the Rylane full back on the right wing and Donoughmore had Rylane on the ropes at this stage. Aidan O’Shea scored an excellent third goal in the 75th minute. There looked to be little danger when O’Shea gained possession on the right wing; however he beat his marker and cut back inside before despatching a shot low to the bottom left hand corner. Conor Kelleher put the icing on the cake in the 85 minute when a defence splitting pass by O’Shea put him through one on one with Moynihan in the Rylane goal. Kelleher just got to the ball before Moynihan and he pushed the ball past him to his right before finishing brilliantly from a very acute angle. Donoughmore have conceded only three goals in their first five league games this season and again today the defence was superb throughout giving Rylane very little opportunities with Tom Daly and Connie Buckley in particular doing well. Today was a day that things clicked for Donoughmore going forward and every player played his part with Aidan O’Shea leading the line well and Damien Hennessy and Dan McSweeney causing a lot of problems out wide.
