Donoughmore Athletic 1 Springfield 2
Springfield scored a deserved victory over Donoughmore in the Munster Junior Cup
in Stuake on Saturday last. Donoughmore started well and created some good opportunities early on before taking the lead in the 15th minute. Aidan O’Shea chased a long kick-out from Noel O’Connell before he unleashed a great volley from 15 yards low into the bottom corner of the net. Sprinfield had the majority of the possession for the rest of the first half and brought out some excellent saves from Noel O’Connell in goal. Donoughmore looked very rusty from having played only two games in the previous six weeks and this was a telling factor. The score remained 1-0 at half-time but Springfield grabbed the equaliser within 30 seconds of the restart. The goal came about from some very poor defending by Donoughmore in their penalty area which lead to an easy finish from a couple of yards out. Springfield continued to have the upper hand and scored what proved to be the winner in the 65th minute again from close range. Donoughmore came more into the game in the last twenty minutes but failed to really trouble Springfield in the last third and the game seemed to peter out after that. Noel O’Connell, Tom Daly and Aidan O’Shea did well for Donoughmore.

Fairview 1 Donoughmore Athletic 2

Donoughmore put a little pressure on leader’s Bohemians with a hard fought but deserved win over Fairview at Hillington Park on Saturday last. Weather conditions were awful with heavy showers and a sometimes gale force wind. Donoughmore played the first half with this wind at their backs and were ahead after 10 minutes. Pat Foley won possession with an excellent tackle on the right wing and then Colm O’Sullivan played a great crossfield pass to Aidan O’Shea’s feet. O’Shea had a lot to do but after beating his man he raced through on goal and drew the keeper from his line before slipping the ball under him into the corner of the net. Donoughmore dominated most of the exchanges in the first half and despite creating a number of half chances were unable to build on their lead. The score was 1-0 at half-time and straight from the restart Donoughmore could have doubled their lead. Aidan O’Shea broke down the left, beat two defenders and cut in to the byline before squaring the ball for Colm O’Sullivan. However under pressure O’Sullivan hit the ball first time and it flew narrowly wide. Fairview came more into the game at this stage and looked dangerous on the break. Fairview equalised in the 70th minute when one of their strikers found himself unmarked 8 yards out and he gave Noel O’Connell in goal no chance. That goal was always going to test Donoughmore’s character and with the weather conditions’ deteriorating it was really going to be an uphill struggle.  In the 77th minute Conor Kelleher, starting his first game up front for Donoughmore, went rampaging down the left flank and when he looked up he spotted Aidan O’Shea free on the edge of the box. Kelleher found him with an excellent pass and O’Shea took one touch before hitting an unstoppable shot to the Fairview net from 20 yards for what proved to be a brilliant winner. Donoughmore could have added to their advantage as Fairview then threw everything forward but some last gasp defending denied them the third goal. Donoughmore worked hard for each other throughout and had a man of the match performance from Aidan O’Shea with Conor Kelleher, Alan McSweeney and Peter Murphy doing very well. Donoughmore have now closed the gap on leader’s Bohemian’s to just two points but of course it is very early days yet. Donoughmore are away to Springfield next Sunday morning in the second round of the Munster Junior Cup.

Donoughmore Athletic 0 Ballinhassig 1 (After Extra-Time)
Donoughmore were defeated in the first round of the AOH Cup by Third Division Ballinhassig in Stuake on Saturday last. Donoughmore started well and played some good football in the first 20 minutes with Aidan O’Shea, Jonathan Hennessy and Conor Kelleher getting into some good positions but Donoughmore’s finishing was off target.  The teams went in at half-time at 0-0 and the second half was dominated by Donoughmore for large periods but the final pass always seemed to be missing. Donoughmore enjoyed the majority of the possession in the second half but Ballinhassig continued to defend resolutely. The game went into extra time scoreless and seemed destined for penalties when Ballinhassig scored the winner on a rare breakaway right at the end of the first period of extra time. Some poor Donoughmore defending allowed a cross to come in deep to the far post and despite having adequate numbers Donoughmore failed to clear and the ball was finished to the net from 8 yards. Donoughmore still had time to rescue the game but despite creating one or two more chances could not get the equaliser. Conor Kelleher had an excellent game with Rob O’Sullivan and Ken Cullinane also doing well. Donoughmore need to improve big time next week when they are away to Fairview on Saturday afternoon in the league.
